Disney Junior has commissioned what it claims is the first animated Western aimed at preschool children, a 26-episode show with singer Mandy Moore attached. DHX Media-owned Wildbrain Entertainment has begun production on Oki's Oasis (left), which is set to air on Disney Junior channels and programming blocks worldwide in 2013.

US singer-songwriter and actress Moore will voice the titular Oki, a female feline sheriff who, along with her woodpecker deputy, ensures her town remains the friendliest in the Wild West. Each episode is 11 minutes long and features two songs.

http://www.zodiakrights.com/ Denis Morella and George Evelyn developed the concept, which was adapted for the small screen by Holly Huggins. The trio, which was behind another Disney series, Higglytown Heroes, will executive-produce Oki.

"Oki's Oasis uses the legend of the Old West to impart social skills and lessons for young kids about being a good friend and neighbour," said Nancy Kanter, senior VP of original programming and general manager of Disney Junior Worldwide.

She added the commission "demonstrates Disney Junior's dedication to programming that highlights the importance of great, heartfelt storytelling as an impetus for learning and development."
